A gateway is a network point that acts as an entrance to another network. A gateway is a
Router that also performs
Protocol translations.
On the Internet, a
Node or stopping point can be either a gateway node or a host (end-point) node. Both the computers of Internet users and the computers that serve pages to users are host nodes. The computers that control traffic within your company's network or at your local Internet service provider (
ISP) are gateway nodes.
Gigabit Ethernet supports speeds of 1Gbps and this media is often used for network Backbones. There are four forms of Gigabit Ethernet
•Gigabit Ethernet (802.3z)
•1000BaseSX –Multi mode fiber, near Infrared light, max. length 220 meters
•1000BaseLX –Single mode fiber at 2km, Multi mode fiber at 550 meters, visible light
•1000BaseCX –Shielded Twisted Pair, 25 meters, obsolete standard, succeeded by 1000BaseT
•1000BaseT –UTP, max length 100 meters

GPRS –General Packet Radio Services
GPRS is a packet-based
Wireless communication service that
promises data rates from 56 up to 114 Kbps and continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users. The higher data rates will allow users to take part in video conferences and interact with multimedia Web sites and similar applications using mobile handheld devices as well as notebook computers. GPRS is based on Global System for Mobile (
GSM) communication and will complement existing services such as circuit-switched cellular phone connections and the Short Message Service (SMS). Some data collection computers are available with GPRS radios.
GPS –Global Positioning System
The Global Positioning System is a "constellation" of 28 well-spaced satellites that orbit the Earth and make it possible for people with ground receivers to pinpoint their geographic location. The location accuracy is anywhere from 100 to 10 meters for most equipment.
Accuracy can be pinpointed to within one (1) meter with special military-approved equipment. GPS equipment is widely used in science and has now become sufficiently low-cost so that almost anyone can own a GPS receiver.
GPS receivers are available for some data collection equipment.

In 2001, Microsoft bought Great Plains Software, which is an
ERP solution that addresses business-process needs at the mid-market segment and scales to meet the requirements of complex business processes in the upper mid-market and corporate segments. It provides functionality for financial management, project management,
Supply Chain management (
SCM), analytics, human resources and payroll, manufacturing, and e-commerce.

GS1 is the new name for the combined legacies of UCC, EAN International and its expanding member organization base.
Their mission statement: By creating Open, Global, Multisectoral Standards based on Best Business Practices, and by driving their implementation, play a leading role in Supply & Demand Chain Management improvement worldwide.
GS1's main activity is the development of the EAN.UCC system, the Global language of Business, a series of standards designed to improve Supply Chain management. Much of the development is initiated by its members, the Member Organizations (MOs).
GSM – Global System for Mobile communications.
GSM is a digitalmobile telephone system that is widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. GSM uses a variation of TDMA and is the most widely used of the three digital Wireless telephone technologies (TDMA, GSM, and CDMA). GSM digitizes and compresses data, then sends it down a channel with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot. It operates at either the 900 or 1800MHz Frequency band.
GTIN – Global Trade Item Number
GTIN is a term that describes a family of data structures that identify products and services. GTINs can be 8, 12, 13, or 14 characters long. The data structures that can represent a GTIN are:
EAN/
UCC 8, UCC 12, EAN/UCC 12, and
EAN/UCC14. The GTIN encodes a company ID number and a product ID number.
Symbologies that can encode the above data structures include: EAN 8,
UPC A, EAN 13,
ITF-14,
UCC/EAN-128, and
RSS symbologies. To be GTIN compliant means that you are 2005 Sunrise compliant and that you are able to process and store 14 digit GTINs although the ability to scan RSS is not required. For GTINs less than 14 characters, it is indicated that leading zeros be added to bring the total length to 14.GTIN encoded with the EAN/UCC 13 data structure encoded in a EAN13
Barcode. GTIN encoded with the UCC/EAN-128 data structure encoded in a
Code 128 barcode.
