Cisco 11XX and Cisco 12XX Access Points

Symptom

AP will  not power

Unable to configure IP and SSID through IPSU connected to network

1) AP is unresponsive
2) AP on different subnet

1) Cycle AP power and try again.
2) Connect to the AP through console port (see note a)

Unable to login to AP

1) Invalid user name or password

1) Power down the AP.  Press and hold the mode button while powering up AP.  Release the “mode” button after 5 sec and allow AP to boot up completely

Unable to connect 802.11b devices to AP

1) Data rates set for 802.11g
2) Conflicting wireless security settings

1) Enable 802.11b rates only (see note b)
2) Decide what wireless security level is required and set AP and terminal to match

Poor wireless coverage

1) Improperly mounted antenna (remote antenna operation)
2) AP set for diversity (dual antenna operation) while only using a single antenna
3) Transmit power set to low\high for environment

1) Move antenna to the proper orientation based on the OEM recommendations (see note c)
2) Reconfigure AP for single antenna operation (see note d)
3) Adjust transmit power up or down depending on environment (see note e)

Unable to roam between multiple AP’s

1) AP’s with overlapping coverage areas set to the same channel
2) AP(s) have lost connection to wired network
3) AP(s) have detected a possible network attack and disable the radio(s)

1) Set AP(s) to non overlapping channels
2) Check wired network for connectivity issues
3) Check error log on AP(s) and adjust wireless security settings accordingly

 

Notes:

a.) Connect to the AP through the console port and cycle power. Once the AP has full booted up follow the steps below. When prompted for a user name and password enter “Cisco” for both.
